We are proud to announce that on October 1, 2017 Besser Credit union will be further known as

The decision and selection of Wolverine State as the new CU name was the end result of an in-depth, extensive and deliberate five month process.  The committee that decided the new name was comprised of both Besser’s and Thunder Bay’s Board of Directors, management, along with select staff and other volunteers. The committee received a total of 93 different name suggestions.  Careful consideration was given to each suggestion and the pros and cons of the final selected new name were weighed.

We ask that you please come join us in celebration during the week of October 16th through October 20th. We will be having free food, drinks, giveaways, and prizes all week. Each day we will be raffling off something new, so make sure to come check us out!

Introducing Wolverine State Credit Union

Over the past year, we’ve been working on a two pretty significant changes. First the merger between Besser Credit Union and Thunder Bay Area Credit Union. Secondly we’ve been working on a new name and a new brand! Finally we have been reevaluating ways to better serve you and deliver more value in the products we offer.

We want to announce where this journey has taken us. We would also like to thank all of those members who have volunteered, given us feedback and helped us throughout this journey. It was an extensive process with reviews and perspectives across every facet of our organization.

By selecting our new name, we have made an investment in our future and have provided a foundation for growth in the years ahead. This new milestone in our history is exciting. You are invited to share in the celebration as we embark on this new journey together.

Q&A about the New Name Change

Q. Is Besser CU being bought out or acquired?

A. Absolutely not. This is a partnership between two successful organizations so that we can serve you, and our community even better.  The merger between Besser and Thunder Bay Area Credit Union was completely voluntary and made in the best interest of both memberships.

Q. Why are we changing our name?

A. As part of the merger agreement a new name had to be chosen to represent the new combined credit union. Because of the merger with Thunder Bay Area Credit Union and the soon to be expansion of the credit union’s field of membership, Besser Credit Union will be changing its name to Wolverine State Credit Union.

Q. Is the credit union changing ownership?

A. No, the credit union’s Board of Directors is a combination of both Besser’s and Thunder Bay Area’s Board of Directors. That’s means the same local control, and the same staff.

Q. Where will the main office be located and will any branches be closing?

A. Both Bagley and Chisholm Street branches will stay open, with Bagley Street serving as the Main Office.

Q. Will my Besser or Thunder Bay Area Debit (ATM) and Credit Cards still work?

A. Yes, you can still use your current Besser and Thunder Bay Area debit, ATM and credit cards. Your old cards will eventually be replaced with updated ones.

Q. Can I still use my Besser or Thunder Bay Area Checks and Deposit Slips?

A. Yes, you can continue to use your Besser or Thunder Bay Area checks and deposit slips. When you run out of checks or deposit slips, your new ones will have the new name and logo.

Q. Will I have to change Automatic Drafts and Direct Deposits?

A. No, automatic drafts and direct deposits previously setup are routed using the same transit and account numbers as they are now.

For those former Thunder Bay Area members, some employers may request you complete a new payroll deduction from. If so please be sure to use your revised account number and the R&T #272476446 and new 7 digit revised account number.

If you are experiencing issues with your Direct Deposit or Automatic Deductions, please contact the credit union for assistance.

Q. Will this affect my loans, savings and investments?

A. No, the name change will not impact any of your accounts.

Q. How does this merger and name change benefit our current members?

A. Members will still be able to enjoy our great service! But now we will have more staff and resources to serve you our membership even better. By bringing together two local financially sound organizations, members will enjoy better savings and loan rates, lower fees and new and improved products and services.

Q. Why was the name Wolverine State Credit Union selected?

A. Michigan has long been known as the Wolverine State. It has been the state’s traditional nick-name since the early 1800s. Wolverines are noted for their strength and cunning disproportionate to their size. Despite their small size they are able to successfully compete against other predator species much larger then themselves. Much like our credit union, who even after the merger, will still be the second smallest of the five CUs already in Alpena. This is even before Northland Area FCU builds their new office.

Part of the merger agreement stated that both credit union’s had to change their names to something completely new. The new name gives the credit union appeal to current and potential members who reside in both Alpena and the surrounding area along with offering a sense of our own fierce protection of our member’s financial future.

Account Numbers

Members of Besser Credit Union will not see any changes to their account numbers.

For only those former members of Thunder Bay Area Credit Union who maybe yet unaware:
Your account has been increased to 7 digits. Your new account number will end in your previous account number but will now start with a “3” and be backfilled with “0s”.

So if your Thunder Bay account was 12345 your converted Besser/Wolverine State account is now 3012345.

Example:

  • If your account number was “999” it will now read “3000999”
  • If your account number was “9999” it will now read “3009999”
  • If your account number was “99999” it will now read “3099999”

It’s Me 247 Home Banking

Although there will be a slightly new look to the Home Banking system, your user name, password and security questions will all remain the same.

CU Talk, Audio Banking

The Credit Union ID number will be “132”. Your account number and password will remain the same.

Debit & Credit Cards

You will still be able to use your current Besser and Thunder Bay Area ATM, debit, and credit cards. For issues with your plastic cards please contact either Karen or Kristi in the Plastics Department at 1-800-655-6508.

Existing Checks, Direct Deposit, and Auto Payments

All existing Besser and Thunder Bay Area Credit Union checks you have will all still work as usual. You can continue to use them until they either expire or you need to replace them.

Former Thunder Bay Area Credit Union members, as a benefit of the merger, you will now be able to receive one free box of checks per year.

All previous Direct Deposits, Auto Payments both AFT and ACH will still work as normal going forward. However any electronic payments or deposits setup after 9/1/2017 should use the Wolverine State CU Routing number of 272476446.

If you do notice a problem with either you’re Direct Deposit or Electronic Payments please contact the credit union immediately.

For Thunder Bay Area CU members many of the sub account suffixes have changed, below is a list of the most common. Many of your loan suffixes may have changed as well. For the exact loan suffix number please view your Home Banking summary or contact the credit union. For those Besser members these have all remained the same.

As you can see from the New Fee Schedule an added benefit of the partnership between Besser and Thunder Bay Area Credit union was the lowering and elimination of many of our fees.

For example: The Overdraft Transfer Fee from a savings account, Overdraft Transfer Fee from Line of Credit and the Negative Share Fee have been eliminated. We figure it’s your money and you shouldn’t be charged for using it.
